Chapter 9

Katia stood on the balcony and watched the sun rise over the snow capped mountains. She had been awake all night, wrestling with her thoughts. There was so much to consider. So many pros and cons for each argument she could come up with.

If she accepted Mikhail, her life would most likely be in constant danger. She would have to be guarded at all times. It would become a natural part of her life to have a bodyguard, although, as bodyguards went, Garret didn’t seem too bad.

Then there was the whole Kindred thing to consider. She knew nothing about their secretive culture. Granted, she had lived in this little valley for several years, but no one had given off a hint of what they really were. Katia wondered how many of the people she had met and befriended were actually Kindred and how many were human.

Being the queen or Dame of an entire clan of people was certainly scary. What did she know about ruling anyone? She could barely remember to water her houseplants and forget raising anything else. She couldn’t keep a goldfish alive.

The edge of violence that the Kindred seemed to live in scared her a lot. Knowing that at any time someone could challenge Mikhail for his position as Cadre, and kill him, was terrifying. That the Kindred accepted it as normal scared her even more.

The issue that seemed to play over in her head the most was Mikhail himself. She had loved him for as long as she could remember. Being his bondmate was a dream come true for Katia. That was, of course, assuming they were able to work out the problems they had between them.

Loving Mikhail wasn’t her issue. Even his being Kindred wasn’t too much of an issue. A little strange, but not something she couldn’t get over. Which really confused her. Why wasn’t she more afraid of the fact the man she loved could turn furry?

No, her issue was the lying. Even if it hurt a little, she understood why he had kept the Kindred secret from her. It was for the safety of everyone involved. No, it was the way he had lied to her, the things he had said to her that hurt the most. And it made her wonder if she could trust him.

Maybe that was the real issue, trust. Could she trust that Mikhail meant it when he said that he loved her? Could she trust he wouldn’t turn on her in the future? She wanted to believe him. More than anything in the world, she wanted to believe him. But he had hurt her so much, telling her that love wasn’t real, that she wasn’t good enough, that he didn’t want her.

Deciding she couldn’t get past that without first talking with Mikhail, Katia ran a hand quickly through her uncombed hair. Determining she wasn’t going to look much better than she did right now, she went to the door and opened it.

Garret smiled down at her as he turned toward her.
